Richard "Dick" Esau, a resident of Stallion Springs, California for 29 years, died at his home following a short battle with lung cancer.

Mr. Esau was born at his grandparents' home in Petersburg, Nebraska. He was raised on his parents' cattle ranch north of Douglas, which is operated today by the Esau family. In 1946 Mr. Esau followed his older brother's footsteps by volunteering for military duty. He enlisted in the Marine Corps where he fulfilled a three-year service commitment. During that time he served in the Pacific Theatre on the U.S.S. Chicago. He was subsequently stationed in Washington, D.C. where he earned the right to serve in President Truman's Honor Guard.

In 1947, Mr. Esau married Betty Lucille Leininger in the nation's capitol. Ultimately the couple moved to Casper, where he started an eight-year career with the Standard Oil Company. During their 10-year marriage, they had four children, Carol, Cathy, Lou Ellen and Richard II.

Following his divorce, Mr. Esau moved to Portland, Ore., to start his career in the aviation industry. On April 10, 1962, Mr. Esau married Martha Ann Cassady in Salem, Ore. Mr. Esau moved his family to California, first to the Lancaster area, then to Stallion Springs, where he served more than 24 years as a flight test mechanic for Lockheed Martin and its predecessor companies. He was married for 34 years until Marth'a death in 1996. They had one child, Jacqueline.

He is survived by his daughters Carol Harris of Addition, N.Y., Catherine DiTullio of Redding, Conn.; Lou Ellen Campbell of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and Jacqueline Bastian of Lompoc, Calif.; sisters Helen Bess of Englewood, Colo.; and Irene Story of Lusk; 12 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Martha; brothers Ivan, Donald and Harold; and son Richard Gordon Esau II.

Family and friends gathered at the ranch in 2006 to celebrate Mr. Esau's life and interment followed at Douglas Park Cemetery.
