Herman Mathews is the the son of Jesse and Abiah Bradley Mathews. He was an engineer on the Erie Canal. He built the dam at Lowell, Iowa that powered a grain and saw mill on the Skunk River. He married Ann Lester, October 1, 1828 in Cayuga County, New York. Herman and Ann Lester Mathews were the parents to eleven children; Francis, Jesse, David, Crockett, Henry Clay, Charles, Edward Folsom, Mary Ann, Hiriam Smith, Bradley, Elizabeth and Herman.
