MAYOR & U.S. POSTMASTER
NAME: Harry S Little
POST OFFICE LOCATION: La Garita, Saguache, Colorado
APPOINTMENT DATE: 7 Apr 1899
VOLUME #: 73
VOLUME YEAR RANGE: 1891-1901

Del Norte Prospector dated April 14, 1939
Funeral services were held Saturday for Harry S. Little, 82, San Juan pioneer mining man, one-time schoolmate of the late Andrew Mellon; and associate of Mark Biedell, Portuguese merchant of early days in this territory. He died last Thursday after an active life in the mining west since the early 1880s.
Harry Little was born Feb. 14, 1858 at Torrence Station, Pennsylvania, one of six sons born in the family. When a youth of 19, he started west, landing in St. Louis in 1878. Two years later, he came west, seeking adventure and fortune, accompanying a chum.
He landed in Del Norte in the spring of 1880 and after a short time here went on to the San Juan country and became a manager of a general merchandise store for Mark Biedell at Animas Forks. His love for mining and the open called him back to the Biedell camp north of Del Norte in 1883-84, when that camp was booming. Later he returned to the San Juan country and became known as one of the best informed men on mining matters in the southwest part of the state. For the last 55 years, Little spent his winters in the La Garia district and summers at Eureka, near Animas.
Little attended school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and it was there that he once was a classmate of the late Andrew Mellon, Secretary of the Treasury under Herbert Hoover.
Funeral services were held from the Wells-Burress funeral home Saturday, with Rev. Jay L. Chestnutt officiating. Burial was in the Del Norte cemetery.

Gravesite Details

It's hard to tell where D section starts and ends, but searched & couldn't find this marker. There are lots of worn and toppled markers in this part of the cemetery and lots of open space, probably indicating many unmarked graves.
