The lure of California caused him to find his way through the military to Benicia, Solano county in 1858. He worked his way about the state before settling in the Point of Timber district with the acquistion of 385 acres of farmland in 1867. He married 'Maggie' Eachus 17 Apr 1870 and became a successful farmer in the area. After retiring, he turned the ranch over to his son, Charles, who developed east county irrigation and the Byron-Bethany Irrigation District.
