Caroline Barnes is my great great great grandmother. I grew up knowing
her name as Caroline Clark Barnes. I will continue to believe this because
Her mother had not been with Jerome De Grange for quite some time while he returned to France. Marie Julie was left in the care of Daniel Clark and this is when Clark fathered Caroline. On his instruction Caroline was introduced to Mary Clark, mother of Daniel, as his natural daughter. He claimed paternity. I am aware of Julie Marie and Daniels second daughter,
Myra, who made claims to be the only legitimate daughter for purposes of being the only heir to Clark's estate. After many court cases she won. Caroline's mother testified Caroline was born of her marriage to a man she had not seen or physically been with for over one year. In my memorial to my grandmother she shall remain with the name she was given and known by. As stated in the memorial her mother left her and only looked at her once when she was a child. Daniel Clark paid for everything she needed and did remember her in his will. Mary Clark left money to Caroline, her granddaughter in her will.
I was asked to change her name from Clark to De Grange. I choose to
have her named as she always was. Caroline Clark.
Below is my original memorial for my great great great grandmother.
The daughter of Daniel Clark and Marie Julie Carriere DesGrange of New Orleans LA. Daniel Clark was born in Ireland and because the parents of Julie Marie were from France she was a first generation Creole.
She married Jerome DesGrange of France when he was about forty years old and Marie Julie was thirteen years old. DesGrange was in France on an extended family business matter when "Zulime" as she was known and Clark began their romance. Because he was a US Congressman he could not publicly acknowledge his romance and the resultant pregnancy. At some point it was discovered that DesGrange was married to another woman and "Zulime" had their marriage anulled. It is not known when or if she and Daniel Clark married. In preperation for the birth of her child Marie Julie accompanied by her sister and Clark's business partner went to Philadelphia PA, where Caroline was born two months early. Caroline was placed in the care of a nurse because her mother had no milk."Zulime" returned to New Orleans LA and it is not known if she ever saw Caroline again. Daniel Clark was not present at the birth but acknowledged his paternity and accepted financial responsibility for the Caroline. The choiceio of the nurse did not please Daniel Clark. Caroline was removed at the age of two or three years old and given to the care of Mr and Mrs James Alexander of Trenton, New Jersey. An old family friend of Clark's from Ireland was asked to oversee her welfare. Daniel Clark visited Caroline when he was in Philadelphia and treated her with the tenderness of a parent. Her expenses were paid by drafts on his account with his business partner or directly from his own account in New Orleans LA. After his death in 1813 it was arranged for her to enter "Mrs Baizely's Boarding School in Philadelphia PA" in exchange for her room and board and education she would teach the younger children. At some time after Clarks's death, Caroline was introduced to her grandmother as Daniel Clark's "natural daughter." Mrs Mary Clark gave her granddaughter a small allowance while she was at school. She was named one of Mrs Clark's heirs at her death in 1823. Before her grandmother's death Caroline left boarding school to marry a Philadelphia doctor, John Barnes. About 1822 Caroline and John married and were disowned at Philadelphia MM for marriage out of unity.
Their children were: Clarance, Henry C, Howard, Augustus F., Algernon Sidney and Theodore. In 1830 she and her family lived in Mississippi.
May 31, 1845 she died of "Affection of the heart" in St Louis, MO.
