Del Norte Prospector dated December 19, 1947
Funeral services were conducted Saturday from the Presbyterian Church for John B. combs. Mr. Combs, past 90 years of age and a resident of this community for 31 years, died Thursday evening. He had been failing for several years.
John B. Combs was born Feb. 5, 1857 in Mount Sterling, Kentucky. With his parents he moved to Kansas City, Missouri, at the age of eight, where he attended school and passed his boyhood. He later moved to Kansas and was married there August 12, 1885, to Amanda Arnold, who survives him. They were married at Scandia, Kansas.
To this union were born nine children, five of whom are deceased.
In 1916 the family moved to Del Norte from maple Hill, Kansas. He farmed in this district until his retirement. At the time of his demise he was 90 years, 10 months, and six days of age.
The Combs’ observed their sixty-second wedding anniversary here last August.
Besides Mrs. Combs, he is survived by two sons—Oscar of Canon City and Joseph of Boise, Idaho; two daughters, Mrs. George Voss of Del Norte and Mrs. Mary Rudesell, of Los Angeles, California and five grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Charles Manlove, of Galveston, Texas, numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of warm friends.
His was a beautiful and lovely life; and in his sufferings his soul life was mellowed in sweetness and childlike trust. Christ was indeed the Lily of the Valley to him. We shall see him in immortal beauty when Eden’s flowers perfume and beautify the hope of the blessed beside the crystal waters in the Paradise of God. Yes, we shall see and know our Friend and beloved again in the triumph of complete redemption shining as the stars of the firmament for ever and ever.
Pallbearers were C.D. Voris, R. F. Wells, George Worker, A.V. Stephenson, Glenn Nash and Bain Sutherland.
