ALBERT HARRIS OF BLANCHE COMMUNITY DIED DECEMBER 20, 1946; FUNERAL HELD MONDAY
John Albert Harris, son of John and Nancy Harris, was born November 2, 1868 in Page County, Iowa. He departed this life at Imperial, Nebraska, December 20, 1946, having reached the age of 78 years and 17 days.
At the age of 15 years, John Albert (who became better known to his many friends as Al or "Uncle Duffy") went to Kansas to blaze a trail in life for himself. Later he went to Oklahoma, but returned to Kansas, where he met and married Laura Baker. Their marriage was solemnized March 14, 1903, and to this happy union there were born eleven children. Three of the children preceded their father in death, having passed away in infancy.
The family moved to Chase County, Nebraska in 1907 and this county has remained their home since that time. Having thus been among the early residents of the territory in the years when many of the pioneer conditions remained, the road was often rough and troubles were frequent. However, everyone within communicating distance, soon learned they could always depend upon "Uncle Duffy" to render any needed assistance that was within his power.
All his long and useful life, to young and old alike, he was glad to give a helping hand. And he steadily worked in every way he could for the betterment of his community. An outstanding example of this fine spirit was during the influenza epidemic, at the time of World War I when he was always available to help any family, regardless of circumstances.
Always smiling "Uncle Duffy" lived his rich full life to the last, showering his affections and attentions to all.
Mr. Harris was a highly regarded member of Imperial Lodge Number 203, Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Until advanced age and ill health made it impossible to do so, he attended lodge frequently and took an active part in its good work.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Laura, four sons, Bert and Clyde of Elsie, Nebraska, Arden of Grant Nebraska, and Elmer of Sumner, Washingotn; four daughters, Mrs. May Goodman of Phoenix, Arizona, Mrs. Iva McCoy of Grant, Nebraska, Mrs. Alta Eckerd of Sumner, Washington, and Mrs. Zella Bailey of Paxton, Nebraska; also four brothers, four sisters, twenty-one grandchildren, other relatives, and many, many friends to all whom his fine, cheerful spirit, and eagerness to be of service had so greatly endeared him.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, December 23, at the Blanche Church, with Rev. Olan Terrel of Elsie officiating. Comforting hymns were sung by Mrs. Francis Cutler, Mrs. George Gauger, Web Fleming, and H. Bancroft with Mrs. Charles Jameson at the piano.
Casket bearers were Leon Whitman, George Whitman, Robert Kennedy, George Fletcher, Dewey Rowley, and William Shalfa. Interment was in the Blanche cemetery, with Lohrs & Reynolds Service of Imperial, Nebraska in charge.
Information found in The Imperial Republican Newspaper, Imperial, Chase County, Nebraska, Thursday, December 26, 1946, both hospital news of admitting and obituary were found on page 1.
