Martin DIAL, Patriot of the American Revolution - served as a Private in the company commanded by Capt. John Ridgeway in the South Carolina Regiment of Infantry commanded by Cols. Hays & Kilgore. Martin was with Captain John Ridgeway when "Bloody Bill Cunningham's Tory Gang" attacked them at a place on the Saluda River now known as the "Cane Brake Massacre". Martin was one of the few soldiers that escaped. Facing execution by the British, Martin's life was spared by his oldest brother, Colonel Hastings Dial, an officer with the British Army.
