When the Civil War came began, John enlisted at Logansport, Indiana on Oct.2,1861, for 3 years in Company B of the 46th Regiment of the Indiana Volunteer Infantry. The description given on the enlistment papers stated he was 5ft.10 in., had a dark complexion, black eyes, dark hair, and by occupation he was a mechanic. His residence was in Harrison Twp. He was mustered in at Logansport Nov. 5, 1861 with the rank of Corporal.

John R. Cunningham was among those captured at Mansfield, Louisiana, on April 8,1864. He was a prisoner of war at Camp Groce, near Hempstead, Waller Co. Texas until he was paroled on Dec. 5, 1864. On Dec. 12th, he was delivered to a steamer in the Gulf of Mexico off Galveston,Texas. John died on passage from Galveston to New Orleans on Dec.13, 1864, from exposures suffered while in Camp Groce, Texas.
