Asturian Royalty. Born the son of Fruela of Cantabria, and was a nephew of Alfonso I of Asturias. He succeeded Mauregato the Usurper to the throne upon his death in 788. In 791, he defended his kingdom against a Moorish invasion, and was defeated at the Battle of Burbia River in one of the first in a series of aggressive campaigns launched against the Asturian kingdom. Bermudo abdicated his throne after his defeat, but whether voluntarily or under duress is unknown, although traditionally in Spain under the Visigoth rulers, a king of military inadequacy was often required to abdicate. In his lifetime he was, however, considered a generous and illustrious man who was both merciful and pious. After his abdication, he reportedly lived a long life as a monk, and remained on good terms with his successor, Alfonso II. Eventually his son would rule as Ramiro I. His name has also been recorded as Vermudo.
