James Tate Medearis attended schools in Indiana and Illinois and finally the Sarcoxie high school, his father being a grocer there. After leaving high school and taking some commercial training, he was employed in the office of John W. Verbryck Flour and Feed Co. at Carl Junction during the period of 1918-1921, and for 13 years was in the employ of the Federal Pure Food Company.

He came to Carthage, Mo. from Schell City, Mo. and for 11 years continued his work as a salesman for the food company. He was elected to the office of police judge in April, 1936, and was re-elected in 1938. He was a Republican.
