He was the son of Georg Peter and Mary (Capehart) Zoellner. He was named for his uncle, Johann Wilhelm Zoellner, who, like his father, served in the Ansbach-Bayreuth Regiment during the Revolutionary War.
He married Martha Moncrief on March 7, 1819, in Columbia County, Georgia. They were the parents of Mary Ann, Oliver Peter, Michael Hillery, Elisha Arnold, John Andrew, Adiel Sherwood, Amanda Catherine, and Martha Rebecca Zellner. According to Zellner Ancestors, Vol 7 No. 4, Oct. 1990, he was buried in Harris County, probably alongside his wife who predeceased him by 14 years. The exact location is unknown, but it is likely somewhere on the family farm. If his grave had a marker, it apparently has not survived.
