United States Army Officer. He was part of family that produced several generations of United States military heroes. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in June 1875, and was posted as an officer in the 1st United States Cavalry to combat American Indians on the Western Frontier. He was cited for gallant service in action against Indians at Umatilla Agency, Oregon, July 13, 1878, He had risen to Captain by the time of the Spanish-American War, and was cited for his bravery as he led a cavalry squadron in the Battle of Santiago on July 1, 1898. Promoted to Major in May 1901, he was sent with his regiment to the Philippine Islands to help put down the insurrection there. He would die of disease on active duty at his post in November 1902. His father, Commander Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright, served in the Union Navy during the Civil War, and was killed in action in Galveston Harbor, Texas while in command of the “USS Harriet Lane”. His brother, Ensign Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright, served in the United States Navy, and died in 1870 off western Mexico fighting pirates. His son, Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright IV, graduated from the United States Military Academy, was in command of Corregidor Island during World War II, and was a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor. Father and son lay side-by-side in Arlington National Cemetery.
