John Blessing was instantly killed by a freight train at 9:35 am, Sept 17, 1902, near the depot in Tiskilwa, IL. He was 81 years old, retired and living in Tiskilwa. He owned 228 acres of land about a mile south of Tiskilwa. His wife had died a few months ago. He is survived by 12 children:
Sons: Levi, Albert, John Jr., Charles, Frank, Aaron.
Daughters: Amanda, Sophia, Sarah, Mary, Lucinda, Elizabeth.

To pass the time, John went to the depot to see the 9:47 passenger train come in. He arrived before the train was due and walked along the track. A few minutes before the passenger train came in, a freight train whistled from the east. Freight trains, usually do not stop at Tiskilwa. A section man warned John that a freight train was coming. John was walking with his back to the freight train at the side of the tracks and believed that there was room for the train to pass. As the engine was upon him the section man called again, but it was too late. The big heavy cross beam on the pilot of the engine caught John on the back and he was thrown several feet to the side tracks. His back and shoulder blade were broken. Otherwise there were scarcely any marks of injury.
