JUNE DARRENCE ALLEN RAGLAND, 92, died at home on Tuesday, November 12, 2011 after a long and courageous struggle with cancer. She is survived by her husband of 72 years, Joe A. Ragland Sr.; daughter June Ragland Mann, son Joe A. Ragland Jr. and wife Lynda; sister Mary Ann Garrett and brother, Sam Cale Allen.
She was known for her love of God and his creation, demonstrating this in her flair for gardening, cooking, love of the ocean, travel, photography and her nurturing of her family and all those whose lives she touched. Until her last days, she continued to ask to be taken to where she could see the birds landing in her bird bath and the flowers in her garden. She always thanked the Lord in her prayers at family meals for the gift of life and the gift of one another.
June never ceased learning, completing a BA at UHCL in her fifties having left nursing school in Beaumont, Texas in 1939 to marry Joe Ragland Sr. and start their family. She also attended the graduate school of Social Work at Our Lady of the Lake in San Antonio. She graduated from Kirbyville High School in 1936 and has always been credited by her husband with being his greatest teacher. Her love of the written word was a thread running throughout her life, keeping her mind agile and serving to encourage everyone who knew her to pursue education.
June was a past president of the Angleton Study Club, helped initiated the Resale Shop of the Angleton Women's Center, taught CCE at St. Basil's Catholic Church (now Most Holy Trinity), and volunteered at the Ronald McDonalds House in Galveston.
