Mrs. Ellen Royce Colvin
Woman believed to be oldest resident of North Bennington, dies.
Mrs Ellen Royce Colvin, aged 85, widow of the late Edwin Colvin, and said to be the oldest resident of North Bennington, died at her home in North Bennington, Tuesday afternoon at 4:45 after an illness of several weeks dating back to a fall suffered on June 17 of this year.
Mrs. Colvin was born in Sandgate July 17, 1848 a daughter of the late Mr. an Mrs. James Royce.
Jan 29, 1876 she became the bride of Mr. Colvin at Center White Creek. Following the ceremony they came to the Colvin homestead, where they have always resided. Eleven children children were born to them, eight of whom survive. Mr. Colvin passed away July 8, 1929.
Mrs. Colvin, a woman of sterling character, fondly called Grandma Colvin by her large circle of friends, was a fond mother, one always looking for the good and assisting those in need of a word of sympathy to those in trouble. She will be missed by many
She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Murry Lillie of North Adams, Mrs. Fred Beagle, Mrs. Fred Mathews and Mrs. Edgar Austin of North Bennington; four sons, Harry E, Sidney J.,Albert H. and William C., all of North Bennington; nineteen grqandchildren and 23 great grandchildren, and one sister who is 82 yrs old, Miss Fannie Royce of Mechanicville, N.Y.. (Three children, Charles Walter,Hattie A and Ella M. passed away several years ago.
The funeral will be held from her late home, Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, d.s.t. Rev. W.I. Coburn of Amerst, Mass. assisted by Rev. Howard P. Weatherbee of the Baptist church will officiate. The burial will be in the family lot in Grandview cemetery.
