Nathan and Sarah (Schwenk) Knarr were both from the Schuylkill County area, and as a married couple lived and worked in Schuylkill Haven, PA. The Knarr/Knerr family were Swiss, immigrated from Alsace, France, and set up as cabinet makers. The woodworking business became the basis for canal boats when the canals came in, and they built and ran canal boats- were all 'boatmen' until went under.

Nathan and Sarah had nine children, four of the sons enlisted when Abraham Lincoln called for volunteers. Several were with the 50th PA Volunteers and one was Regular Army, 6th US Cavalry. There's a record stating a 5th brother served, but this has not been confirmed.
