Samuel Henry Sanders, Jr. was the eldest son of Samuel H. Sanders & Nettie Bell Lydell Daniel. He was born in Tuscumbia, AL, but grew up in Birmingham, AL. He served for the U.S. Navy Coast Guard in World War II. Sam was stationed in Charleston during the war, and Jeanne was there in Charleston for much of the time, except when she went home to Birmingham for the birth of their son, Sam (III). Samuel was an insurance adjuster, and was working in Decatur when their daughter, Virginia, was born. They moved back to Birmingham in 1956 and lived at the family home in Birmingham for the rest of their lives.
