Apphia Cunningham, a daughter of Apphia (née Cleveland) and Robert Cunningham, was born in 1832 on her family's farm in Cheney's Grove Township, McLean County, Illinois, where her family had settled in 1829. Her father, an Indiana militia veteran who fought in the 1811 Battle of Tippecanoe, had purchased Federal land in the timbered area from which the township took its name. Her unusual name Apphia is Biblical, from Greek meaning bountiful, fruitful.

"Effa" Cunningham and Jesse Stine married on 24 July 1852 in McLean County. The couple became the parents of five children. The couple in 1855 were farming in Le Roy Township, McLean County, and in 1860 Cheney's Grove Township. A few years later, they were farming in Vermilion County, Illinois, and then in adjoining Vermillion County, Indiana. In 1881, Apphia and Jesse Stine moved to Bourbon County, Kansas, and resided there in Hiattville, where Jesse Stine was a hotel keeper, and ran a restaurant and a confectionary store. Apphia Stine died from typhoid fever on 9 November 1893 in Hiattville. Her husband, admitted to Kansas State Soldiers' Home, survived her by less than a year.

Burial place unconfirmed.
