Helen Kennedy Hyder, 88, Powder Branch Community of Elizabethton, passed away on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at her home. She was the daughter of the late Creighton and Hettie Ann Word Kennedy and was born in Tangipahoa, LA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Morey E. Hyder in 1994; a daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Bob Mahan, a granddaughter, Laura Jane Mahan and grandson, Kevin Hyder Mahan, all in 1982.

Mrs. Hyder had a sweet personality and was diligent in all she did. She graduated with honors from Kentwood High School, Kentwood, LA. She worked in the personnel office at the Jacksonville Naval Air Station, and it was there that she met her husband, Morey. Following her years of civil service with the United States Navy, she worked at the James H. Quillen Veteran's Administration. She retired from the VA where she had worked as the Assistant Personnel Manager.

Mrs. Hyder was a member of First Christian Church in Johnson City. She was the former treasurer of Oak Grove Christian Church and also served that church as the pianist. She was a (Pink Lady) volunteer at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital and she was a special buyer for the gift shop at the hospital. She loved her volunteer work, her church work, and her special friends, the Birthday Girls and the Friday Lunch Bunch of the First Christian Church, Johnson City.

Mrs. Hyder was very loyal and especially devoted to her family. Among her favorite things were playing the piano, reading, doing needlework and working in her flower garden. She loved visiting with her grandchildren, spending time with her family and friends, and listening to her niece, Parmys, play the piano from her heart!

She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Anne, of the home; Jane Huegerich and her husband, Tom, Manchester Center, VT; six grandchildren, Brian Enkema, Elizabethton; Jamie Enkema Mefford and her husband, Mike, Johnson City; Benjamin Enkema, Elizabethton; Mark Huegerich and his wife, Nancy, Hickory, NC; Helen Huegerich Chauvin and her husband, Andrew, Virginia Beach, VA; Michael Huegerich and his wife, Erin, Dayton, OH; six great-grandchildren, Claire Chauvin, Lara Chauvin, Luke Chauvin, Lily Mefford, Graham Mefford, and Mary Prather Huegerich. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service for Mrs. Hyder will be conducted at 4:00 PM, Friday, November 11, 2011 in the Chapel of Peace, Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Dr. Gene Wigginton, Dr. William Gwaltney, and Dr. Henry Webb officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 2:00 to 4:00 PM on Friday prior to the service and at the home at other times.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 12, 2011 at the Oak Grove Christian Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Brian Enkema, Mark Huegerich, Benjamin Enkema, Michael Huegerich, Mike Mefford, and Andrew Chauvin. Honorary pallbearers will be the Mr. and Mrs. Class of First Christian Church, Johnson City, and the Birthday Girls.

The family would like to express a special thank you to Dr. Amy Proffitt and the staffs of Amedisys Home Health and Amedisys Hospice for the love and care shown to Mrs. Hyder during her illness.
