1st Husband of Patricia Spence Melampy
Second Lieutenant Robert J. Melampy, US Army Air Force, 20, was killed in action October 7, 1944 over Vienna, Austria while serving as a bombardier with the 15th Air Force. Lieutenant Melampy was announced missing in action in October, 1944. His last letter home had been postmarked October 5th. His death was announced in June, 1946.
The body of Lieutenant Melampy was returned to the United States from Europe in November, 1948. Funeral services for Lieutenant Melampy were held at 8:30 a.m. December 9, 1948 at Meyer and Boehmer Funeral Home and at 9 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Church followed by burial at Calvary Cemetery.
Lieutenant Melampy, born September 14, 1924, graduated from Chaminade High School in 1942 and served as leader of Boy Scout troop 99 at Our Lady of Mercy. He was an employee at Wright Field when he entered the service in February, 194. He graduated from the eighteen-week Deming, New Mexico Bombardier School and was commissioned a second lieutenant in May, 1944. He completed training on a Liberator bomber at the Pueblo, Colorado army airbase in August, 1944 and went overseas August 18, 1944.

On a mission out of Giulia Field #1, Italy, to strike petroleum storage tanks at Vienna, the bomber was struck by anti-aircraft artillery flak and went into a spin, with the wings breaking off, and crashed in the vicinity of Vienna, Austria.
Of the six crewmembers who bailed out, four would be killed. Two survived and became POWs.
