Funeral services for John Burl Ferrell, age 68, a retired farmer and carpenter, were held at the First Baptist Church in Linden, Saturday, December 30, 1961, at 2:30 p.m. The ceremony was conducted by the Reverend Harmon S. Smith, a close friend of the family for a number of years. The music was rendered by the choir of the First Baptist Church with organist, Mrs. Maurine Chumley. Burial was in the Linden Cemetery.

Mr. Ferrell died suddenly with a heart attack, in the Linden Municipal Hospital, Friday, December 29th at 2:10 a.m. The body lay in state at the family residence until burial time.

All of the citizens of Linden have suffered a personal loss in the passing of this useful citizen.

Mr. Ferrell was born March 4, 1893, near Avinger, TX. He moved to New Colony in 1912 and lived there until 1959, at which time he moved to Linden. He became a member of the Turkey Creek Baptist Church at the age of 18 and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Linden at the time of his death.

Mr. Ferrell served as County Commissioner of Precint 1 from January 1, 1939 through 1942. He also served on the City Commission of Linden from January 1960 until his untimely death. Mr. Ferrell served with honor and distinction in this capacity, rendering invaluable service in the progress of the City of Linden, TX. During his tenure of office, among the many achievements of the City of Linden was the erection of the Linden Municipal Hospital, the Linden Fire Station and major improvements of the Water and Sewer Department.

Mr. Ferrell was married to the former Annie Eulala Watkins, December 10, 1911, in Hughes Springs, TX.

He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Lillian Parker, Washom, TX; seven sons, William Vernon, John Orval and Vance Clifton, Linden; Franklin David, Longview; Horace Burl, Jonesville; Morris Edgar, Waskom; and Harland Oneal, Texarkana, TX. One sister, Mrs. Hilda Archabald, Whittier, CA; a twin brother, Bryant Earl, Linden, fourteen grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Acting pallbearers were: Marcus Landrum, Cliff Hays, Jim Holland, Harry Crow, Jr., Earl Bennett, and Joe W. Loevlace.
