Edgar Mason was raised in Vermont, and in the spring of 1878, he relocated to Linn County, Missouri to join his father, Elijah Mason, who had acquired 80 acres of land for farming in Linn County in the autumn of 1877. The family farm eventually increased to 200 acres, and the family engaged in breeding superior strains of livestock, including Percheron horses, registered stock, registered Duroc-Jersey hogs, Delaine-Merino sheep and some registered Holstein cattle, all of high grade and produced with every care in all the details of the business at every step of its progress.
On January 31, 1877, Edgar Mason was united in marriage with Selina Myers, a daughter of Highland H. and Eliza (Babcock) Myers, natives of Vermont who came to Missouri in 1882.
Edgar and Selina Mason had eight children: Charles, a prosperous Linn County farmer; Ida, who married J.R. Edgar, and relocated to Manila, Philippine Islands; Ethel, who married Dr. H.D. Kneedler, a practicing physician, and also relocated to Manila; Harry, also a Linn County farmer; Sarah, who also relocated to the Philippines; Ruby, Geneva, and Merritt.
