In 1851[1849] John Stevenson with his family, came west along the Mississippi and Ohio rivers to Eddyville, Iowa and on the 8th of Nov settled on government land in Mantua Township, Monroe County. Here he devoted his labors to the development of the virgin soil and died in 1896 at age 79. He was liberal in his religious views and a Democrate in politics. His excellent wife lived to be 63 years of age.
