John Buchanan served as an Army Private in the York County Militia during the Revolutionary War. His date of service was 26 Apr 1778.

Information obtained from "Pennsylvania Veterans Burial Cards"
โˆผJohn Buchanan was born in Ireland in 1725. He arrived in America in 1747. He then, supposedly, returned to Ireland and married Jane Russell in 1751. They had 9 children: Sarah, William, Margaret, Ebenezer, Samuel, Thomas, Elizabeth, James and John. President James Buchanan was the grandson of John Buchanan by his 8th child, James. NOTE: I have been unable to substantiate with 100% certainty that this John Buchanan is the one who returned to Ireland and married Jane Russell. However, the John Buchanan associated with this memorial did serve in the American Revolution and did marry Jane Rowan (or Rowen).

On October 3, 1765, John married Jane Rowan, whose family came from Ireland. Together they had 8 children: Andrew, James, Martha (Marthieu), Agnes "Nancy", Mary, Jean "Jane", Thomas, and George.
