John J. Gibbons, 83, of 93 Tremont Street, oldest retired mail carrier in Taunton and for many years, the leading director of minstrel shows in the city, died Monday night at his home following a two years illness. He was known as the "Old Master of Minstrels" in Taunton and surrounding cities and towns and was the director of shows put on by the old Temperance Societies and many other organizations. He was for many years director of St. Joseph's Dramatic Club. Employed at the Taunton Post Office as a mail carrier, he served faithfully for 38 years. He was appointed as a substitute carrier in March 1895 and was given a regular appointment in October 1899. He retired from active service on Nov 01, 1932 when he reached the age of 65. He was born in Taunton, son of the late Michael and Margaret (Sheffell) Gibbons, and made his home here all during his life. He was the husband of Mary A. Leddy who predeceased him by several years. He was educated in the Taunton schools. He was a member of the Massachusetts Catholic Order of Foresters, Taunton Court 73. He was a faithful communicant of St. Paul's Church near his home. He leaves two sons, J. Russell Gibbons of Taunton and William T. Gibbons of Baldwin Park, California; one daughter, Mrs. Milton (Florence M.) Heher of Taunton; one sister, Mrs. Katherine T. Cote of Fall River and three grandchildren.
