John's parents were Simon (1803-1862) and Deborah (1806-1876) Norton (Flint) Bixby, he was the second youngest of a family of ten children (Augustus b. 1831; Sarah b. 1833; Thomas b. 1835; Frances Ann b. 1841; Eulalia b. 1844; Electa b. 1846; Fred b. 1850). He came to California at age 21 and was hired by his cousin, Jotham Bixby, at the Rancho Los Cerritos. There he met Jotham's sister-in-law Susanna Patterson Hathaway (1845-1906). The two married on Oct. 4, 1873, and settled in Wilmington where his son, Fred Hathaway Bixby, was born in 1875, and his daughter Susanna Patterson Bixby Bryant was born in 1880. It was while living here that the Rancho Los Alamitos came on the market. John organized a company to buy it, becoming a third owner and manager. The others were I.W. Hellman, a Los Angeles banker, and Jotham Bixby & Company. He became suddenly ill with appendicitis and died at the age of 39 while in the process of developing Alamitos Bay.

Contrary to what some think, Bixby Park (once Alamitos Park) was not named for him, but for his cousin Jotham Bixby. (Source: Daily Telegram 2/7/1907)BIXBY FAMILY PLOT
