Thomas J. Dunning, 78, 1015 Laramie street, died at 5:30 yesterday at Cray Senior Manor where he was admitted in August. Prior to that he was a patient 30 days at the Atchison hospital. He had been in failing health several years. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Sawin-Dyer chapel with the Rev. A.B. Lindberg, pastor of St. John's Lutheran church at Lancaster, officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Memory Gardens with the Rev. Richard D. Dunning, Middleburg, Ind., son of Mr. Dunning, conducting graveside services. The casket will be in state at the chapel until the hour of the service. The family suggests contributions to the Kansas Masonic Foundation for memorials used for the research at the University of Kansas Medical Center, or the American Cancer Society.

Born June 21, 1989, in Doniphan county, he was the son of Alexander H. and Mary (Kohler/Koehler) Dunning. He attended public schools in Doniphan and Atchison county, and was graduated from Atchison High School in 1916. He was stationed at Midland college in Atchison in the Army Officers Training Corps during WWI. He married Bertha Rosalie Smith on June 22, 1921. She died March 26, 1970.

He worked for Symns Wholesale Grocer Co in the early 1920s and later worked for more than 30 years for BM&S Inc., before he retired in 1965. He was an active member of St. Mark's Lutheran church where he served as secretary of the church council, and was active in the Men's Brotherhood.
He was a long time member of Washington Lodge No. 5 AF & AM and was a past master, and served for over 30 years as secretary of the lodge. He was a member of Washington Commandary No. 2, Knights Templar, Washington Council No. 2 RSM, member of Washington Chapter No. 1 RAM, and served as district deputy grand master of the Masonic lodge.

Mr. Dunning was a member of American Legion Fleming-Jackson-Seever Post No. 6.

He enjoyed growing roses for a hobby and liked to do woodworking and go fishing.

Surviving in addition to Rev. Dunning, are another son, Thomas F. Dunning, 1602 Santa Fe street; a daughter, Mrs. Mary D. Zabrosky, Abbottsford, Wis., and four grandchildren. A granddaughter preceded him in death.

note: VA BIRLS record shows that he was considered active military from 12 Oct 1918 to 14 Dec 1918 in the US Army.
