James was the youngest son of James E. and Emily (Laughead) Foster. He worked in the plumbing industry for many years. In World War II, he enlisted in the Navy, serving as a SeaBee in Norfolk, Virginia and then later on the U.S.S. Sylvania.

James was married twice: first to Gladys Cook and second to Thelma Mayrose.

James and Thelma spent many winters as snow birds in Sarasota, Florida but always returned to Indianapolis. They did not have any children.
