Mr. Mathis was born at Ottumwa, Ia., Jan. 18, 1866. He came to the community six miles west of Parsons in 1871 and had since lived in and around Parsons. He moved into Parsons in 1920 and worked as a carpenter until his retirement in 1933.
He was married to Elvira Fultz April 12, 1896, at Oswego. The couple had planned to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary this year, but plans were canceled after he suffered the stroke the preceding day.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Parsons.
Survivors include the widow; one daughter, Mrs. R. S. Carson, Billings, Mo.; three grandchildren; four great grandchildren; three brothers, Will Mathis, Parsons, Leslie Mathis, Coffeyville, and Theodore Mathis, Colorado Springs, Colo.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Rude Funeral home, conducted by the Rev. J. W. Bays. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery."
