US Congressman. He studied medicine, graduated from the University of Nashville, graduated from Vanderbilt University, in 1882 and never practiced medicine. He then studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1884 and commenced to practice law in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1885. In 1897, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-fifth Congress and to the next five succeeding Congresses, serving until 1909. An unsuccessful candidate for re-election, he continued to practice law until his death at age 65.
