"Marshall" was born in Napa, California. His father, Samuel Marshall Dawdy, died before he was born in 1865. His mother, Kitty Ann Cooper Dawdy, remarried and had other children, but she died in 1872. His three half-siblings stayed in California with their father, Stephen Henry, but by 1880, "Marshall" was living back in Berwick, Warren Co., Illinois and working on a farm. He married Emma L Hampton, his first cousin, in Marion, Missouri in 1888. They resided in Indian Point Township, Knox Co., Illinois, and they were the parents of three children: Francis Earl, Kitty Iris, and Charles Ira. "Marshall" and Emma Dawdy lived out the rest of their lives in the Abingdon area and are buried in the Abingdon Cemetery.
