MUNCIE--Carolyn K. (Connie) Pinkerton Wenz, 74, passed away Friday, November 4, 2011 at Westminster Village, Muncie, after a brief battle with metastatic lung cancer. Her husband and older daughter were by her side.

As a child, Connie enjoyed spending summers at her family's cottage on Lake Shafer in Monticello, IN. She loved boating and was an avid water skier. She also cherished time spent with her grandmother, Florence Smith, whom she fondly called "Ma". Connie graduated from Speedway High School in Speedway, IN, in 1955, and Butler University, where she was a member of Phi Beta Phi sorority. She worked as a floral designer at Grande Flower Shop for many years and upon her graduation from Butler, taught second grade at the James Roby School in Clermont, IN, before moving to Muncie. Connie played bridge for many years and enjoyed challenging herself at Jeopardy. She had a love of and passion for music and was an accomplished vocalist and keyboard player. She was an avid reader and gardener and loved spending time in her backyard.

She was a skilled home cook and baker and was known for serving gourmet dinners and decadent desserts. She enjoyed trying new recipes but always gave them her own "spin". She always had home-baked cookies for her grandchildren when they visited. Those who knew Connie will always remember her ever-present sense of humor and sharp sense of wit and her tendency to "burst into song".

In 1968, she served as the Indiana campaign manager for Robert F. Kennedy. She appeared on a nationwide news segment while working at the state's campaign headquarters and co-hosted a tea for Eunice Kennedy Shriver during Mrs. Shriver's visit to Indiana. In 1992, she organized a successful grassroots effort to get Ross Perot on the Indiana primary ballot, gathering thousands of signatures.

Connie loved to write poetry in rhyme and penned and illustrated a children's storybook for her grandson and the great-grandchildren she looked forward to having. After his retirement, she and her husband, Jim, spent their winters beachfront in Fernandina Beach, FL, where she enjoyed spending time with her grandson, treasured friends, beachcombing and shell collecting, and perusing the shops on Centre Street.

She cherished her time with her dear friends and family and was happiest in their company. Without question, Connie's greatest sense of pride was her family. She loved and adored her three grandchildren and often said if she would have "known they'd have been so wonderful, she'd have had them first". Her three grandchildren shall always cherish fond memories of their time spent with their "Mamaw".

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, James L. (Jim) Wenz; two daughters, Beth A. Haisely of Muncie, and Wendy J. Ward, Kingsland, GA; three grandchildren, Carrie M. Haisley Almon (husband-Luke), Eagle River, AK, Christine D. Haisley Bertram (husband-Eric), Muncie, and James Andrew (Drew) Ward, St. Marys, GA; her son-in-law, Christopher M. Ward of St. Marys, GA; and several cousins in OR.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Irma Pinkerton and her grandparents, Harold and Florence Smith.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the caring and compassionate Devon Lane nursing staff at Westminster Village, Southern Care Hospice, and R.S. Smith, M.D. and staff. Their ever-present support made it possible to navigate this difficult journey. Before her passing, Connie requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Cancer Society or the Muncie Animal Rescue Fund (ARF).

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Garden View Funeral Home, 10501 N. State Road 3, Muncie, with Charles D. Coy, RScP officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery. Visitation will Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Online guest book condolences, and video tributes may be made and viewed at www.gardenviewandgardensofmemory.com.
