Farmer, son of William and Elizabeth (Bracken) Kays of Kentucky; he was born November 17, 1831 in Indiana; his early life was passed on a farm and his education obtained in the district school; came to Abingdon in 1834;

He enlisted in the Union Army in October 1861 as a Private and remained till the close of the War; was promoted to Captain August 14, 1864;

55th Illinois Infantry Regiment Douglas Brigade, 2nd Regiment; Canton Rifles
