John's parents were Murdock Hasty (1796-1842) and Maranda E. Hicklin (1809-1890). He married Elizabeth Garrett on February 26, 1868. They were the parents of 6 children that I am aware of; Della, Leona V., John Thompson Jr., Ina Bell, Ivy and Pearl. John was a farmer and a veteran of the American Civil War.

Union Army: Enlisted in Company I, Iowa 40th Infantry Regiment on 10 Oct 1862. Mustered out on 02 Aug 1865 at Fort Gibson, Cherokee Nation.
