After the death of his first wife, the former Mary Cook, he married the twice or thrice-widowed Elizabeth (nee Partridge) Johnson, who is said to have been married to at least one, and possibly two, husbands whose surname was Hamlin before marrying Mr. Johnson. Captain Payson died in Connecticut at the age of 82, leaving Elizabeth a widow for the third or fourth time.
