Allie Lorene McCullough was born February 22, 1915 in Lawrenceville, IL, the third of nine children of Harry and Launa Eagle Riley. She weighed only two pounds at birth and was so small that she fit into a shoebox and her mother's ring fit on her wrist. When she was preschool age, the family moved to a farm in eastern Iowa near Batavia. When she was fifteen, the family moved to a farm near Deloit in Crawford County. Lorene worked as a domestic helper to several families in Crawford County during her teens and early twenties.

She married Thomas McCullough at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Omaha, NE on October 14, 1940. They resided on a farm in Milford Township, Crawford County, IA. To this union, six children were born. During Thomas's time in World War II, she resided briefly in Wyoming with him and their infant son Jim. While her children were young, she busied herself as a housewife, keeping a garden large enough to feed a family of eight, and canning the bounty to carry through the winter. She also worked for Nadine Olberding and Viola North two days a week.

In 1970, she began working at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison. She retired as the Supervisor of housekeeping in 1985 at the age of 70.

Lorene died Thursday morning, October 27, 2011, at the home of her daughter, Mary Dinges, in Omaha, Nebraska. At the time of her death she had been blessed with 96 years, 8 months and 5 days.

Lorene is survived by five children, James & Collette McCullough of Sioux City, IA; Mary & Michael Dinges of Omaha, NE; Thomas Lyle Jr. (Bub) & Deanna McCullough of Vail, IA; Janice & Dr. H.
