William Riley Ury, former superintendent of the New River Ordnance plant during construction by Mason and Hanger, and outstanding tunnel engineer, died yesterday at his home in New York city after a brief illness.
Mr. Ury, 58, worked for the company 38 years and rose from a labor without much schooling to construction engineer for important projects for national defense.
He left Dublin September 16, last year after spending seven months completing the job here. At one time, he had 7200 men under his supervision, and was one of the most popular officials at the plant.
At the time of his death, he was superintendent of Mason and Hanger's tunnel project at Lackawack, supplying New York City with water.
He is survived by his widow, two sons, Ozone, who worked as concrete foreman here, and Dennis, and two daughters, Mrs. Howard Bush and Mrs. Walton Walker, all of New York city.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 12:30 pm with burial in Birchlawn cemetery, Pearisburg, Va, near relatives. Mr. Ury was a native of Carbus County, N.C.
