Note:

The proper given first name may well have been "Abraham" as used on the Jefferson county Iowa marriage record of November 3, 1857 for his marriage to Sarah Jane Gorsuch.

The obituary, however, used the name as "Abram Morrison", while the headstone inscription is just "A. Morrison".

Will use "Abram Morrison" for the name on this memorial but with those cautions.

Note: the following transcription is updated on September 12, 2015 to reflect the verbatim text as found in the microfilmed image of the Fairfield Ledger on file at the Fairfield Public Library. A previous transcription was edited and somewhat paraphrased.

Also, the DOB for Abram Morrison is being revised based on viewing the microfilm image. The obituary stated his age as being 48 years, 5 months and 17 days. The previous transcription inadvertently listed the year age as 49. As a result, the DOB is being recalculated to be March 30, 1815.

DIED -- In this city, Sept. 16th, 1863, Abram Mprrison, aged 48 years, 5 months and 17 days.

The deceased was born in Huntingdon Co., Pa.. He removed to Missouri about the year 1850, and thence to Jefferson Co., Iowa, about 1853. In April 1862, he entered the 17th Regiment of Iowa Infantry, and continued in the service until in November last, when he was obliged to return home. Since that time he has lingered with the disease which caused his death at times suffering great pains. He was for many years a member of the M. E. Church. He bore his sufferings with Christian fortitude and patience, and, it is hoped, has entered upon the Christian's reward. During his long illness he manifested great interest for the condition of his beloved country, and repeatedly expressed a desire only to live and see the rebellion put down, and the integrity of the Union restored. Although he was not permitted to live to see the consummation of his ardent wish, he has left children who, it is hoped, may for many years to enjoy the blessings of a united Republic, for which their father contributed not only his services, but it may be said, his life. The deceased was twice married. He left a wife and, we believe, eight children -- three of them young and helpless. One, a little girl, survived her father but three days.
