The forth child and the first son of Jordan Holcomb and Anna Hutchings, Samuel was born in Bancroft, Shiawassee County, Michigan around 1845.

During the Civil War, he was an enlisted man in the 10th Michigan Cavalry Company H. He died from disease fifteen days after a skirmish with forces of the Confederate States of America (CSA) on House Mountain, Burnside Point, Kentucky; and was buried 09-Feb-1864 at Camp Nelson, Kentucky National Cemetery.

Military Service Record: Enlisted Aug. 31, 1863, at Shiawassee for 3 years, age 18, Mustered Sept. 2, 1863, died Feb. 9, 1864 at Camp Nelson, buried in grave 1446.
