Death of Deacon Solomon C Atwood
Deacon Solomon C Atwood passed from this life on the morning of February 2nd,at the home of his daughter, Mrs Geo. H Eldredge, where he has been tenderly cared for since the beginning of his more serious illness some two months ago.
Deacon Atwood, the son of Sears and Phebe N Atwood, was born Nov. 26 1841.He was married Dec 29th 1864, to Miss Elizabeth Harding daughter of Capt Joseph and Eunice Harding of this town. She died Feb 7th 1872,leaving two little daughters, Elizabeth Collins, now the wife of Mr Geo H Eldredge, and Emma Josephine widow of the late David E Howes. In 1875 he married Miss Priscilla Nickerson, daughter of Capt Zenas Nickerson who died June 18th 1893,and in 1897 he married again, this time Miss Mary Patterson, who died January 20th 1910.
During his early life he was engaged in steamboating, but since remaining on the land has been employed as a caretaker and helper in many ways.During recent years Deacon Atwood has been one of the few sturdy old men of the town and, besides working outside, has taken care of his own place and home,to which he has clung tenaciously. Not withstanding the invitations of his daughters to come with them, he has remained by himself until the last two Winters, the first of which he spent with Mrs Howes. He was very fond of flowers and fruits, and never tired of showing the beauties of his garden to those who were interested in them.He was a charter member of the N.E.O.P.,a member of St Martin's Lodge, and for years a deacon in the Congregational church where he was an interested and active member.Besides the daughters he leaves a brother,Mr Chas R Atwood, twelve grandchildren who had been most unusually devoted to him, and five great grandchildren.
The funeral service was from the Congregational church, conducted by the Rev Frank H Kasson of Boston and Orleans. The Masons attended in a body.As he lay amid the profusion of the flowers he loved so well, the speakers remarked upon immortality and Mrs Cowan's sweet rendering of
"Asleep in Jesus, blessed sleep" and "Jesus, Lover of my Soul" were especially beautiful and a fitting tribute to the faithfulness and devotion of his long and upright life.
