This memorial is in honor of Rifka Epstein Rabinowitz Garfinkle. Her first husband and the father of her five children -- Pasach, Sam, Izzy, Rachel, and Hasha -- was Moishe Rabinowitz, who died in Russia shortly before Rifka came to the United States to be with her children and their families. The youngest daughter, Hasha, immigrated to Argentina with her husband and the family never saw her again, though she did write and send photos of her children over the years (which I have).
Rifka spoke Russian and Yiddish, but not a lot of English. After arriving in San Francisco, she met and married a wonderful widower named Ephraim Garfinkle, but their marriage was cut short by his death approximately two years later.
