Samuel K. Frantz, s/o Johannes & Anna Maria (Klingensmith) Frantz, married his second wife, Sarah Ellen Smeltzer Smith, widow of John R. Smith, on Mar. 8, 1870.: The son of John B. & Anna Maria (Klingensmith) Frantz, in 1850 he was living with his family in Blair County, Pennsylvania. A tanner and farmer by trade, he stood 5' 9" tall and had black hair and blue eyes. He is not found with any certainty in the 1860 census and possibly had moved to the south-central Pennsylvania region.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the stated age of forty-one in Lancaster September 16, 1861, and mustered into federal service there October 4 as a wagoner with Co. G, 79 Pennsylvania Infantry. He is listed as absent sick in a hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, since November 1863. He was court-martialed on a charge of being an "habitual drunk" with one specification being that he "abandoned his wagon and team." One witness testified that "he is only drunk on payday," while another said that he was the "safest driver in the regiment," but another declared him "a bad driver, who drown one mule and lost the tops of Sibley tents." The court found him guilty, fined him two months' pay, and dishonorably dismissed him from the service, date unknown, a sentence later disputed by a review general who noted many errors in the trial. Samuel is in the company register as "Frantz."
2. Enlisted at the stated age of forty-four in Harrisburg with the regular army February 25, 1865, assigned to Co. G, 15th U.S. Infantry, but discharged for disability to date December 4, 1865, a private. His surname is spelled "Frantz" on the roster.

On October 24, 1868, he applied for a disability pension and received it, so the War Department may have forgiven his indiscretions, although the pension may have been based on his second term of service. He applied for his pension as "France"

He married Margaret Houser, but her status is unknown. He married Sarah Ellen Smith, née Smeltzer, March 8, 1870, and fathered Ray Miller (b. 09/23/70), Jennie May (b. 09/06/72 - married Stephen Uhing), Claude Duvall (b. 12/25/73)., and Samuel J. Tilten (b. 01/19/77). He died in Westmoreland County, but no obituary was found in any online newspaper archive.
