Samuella was the fourth child born to Joseph S. Watkins and Martha Watkins Dyer, she was four years old when her father headed west to California with a large contingent of men searching for gold and by all accounts he never returned to Missouri. Samuella lived with her mother and grandmother until after her grandmother's death in 1862 and by 1870 they have taken in boarders and her occupation is given as teacher on the 1870 census. On 2 Jul 1871 she married Peter Godfrey who was a local photographer and died only a few days after the birth of their son Harry.
