Hiram was the son of Edmond Gray and Rebecca Powell.
On 27 June 1863 Hiram enlisted in the Union Army at Camp Nelson, Kentucky. Enlisting as a private he joined the 49th Regiment, Company A, Kentucky Infantry. He served until 26 December 1864 when Hiram was mustered out of the Union Army at Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky.
Hiram married Lucretia Patterson, and they had 6 children:
George Thomas Gray, Mary Frances Gray, Levi Lee Edmond Gray, Elias Annie Gray, Rebecca Gray, and Euphemy Sandy Gray.
