∼John Campbell was born on 16 Nov 1674 in Drumboden, Londonderry, Ireland. He was the son of Duncan Campbell (1645-1725) and Mary (McCoy) Campbell (1648-1689).
John married Grissel Grace Hay (1668-1741) in Londondenderry, Londondenderry, Ireland (Northern?). Grissel was the daughter of Patrick Hay (1650-1723) and Catherine (Gillis) Hay (1651-1727).
John and Grissel Campbell were the parents of the following known children: John, Patrick, Mary, Jane, James, Robert, William, Charles, Margaret, Catherine, Ann and David Campbell. Some on ancestry list these children as well: Martha, Elizabeth and Nesje Campbell.
John Campbell came from Ireland to America in 1726, with five or six grown sons and several daughters, and settled first in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania. Six or eight years afterwards he removed to that part of Orange county, Virginia, which, in 1738, became Augusta county, where many of his numerous descendants lived for many years. Three of John Campbell's sons came with him to Augusta, VA: Patrick, Robert and David.
John became a citizen of the USA according to the U.S. Naturalization Records in the Locality, Court: Western District of Pennsylvania, U.S. District Court.
Some on ancestry say that John and Grissel died in Fincastle, Botetourt, Virginia, USA. John Campbell died in Beverley Manor VA in Augusta County, VA in 1741. Campbells in Beverley Manor by 1738 - in that year Patrick Campbell acquired 1546 acres of land in the Manor.

Governor David Campbell (1779-1859) of VA was a meticulous researcher and it is mainly due to his work that the story of John Campbell and Grace Hay (parents of White David) and their descendants has survived. Governor Campbell's papers and other documents are part of the Campbell Papers Collection (about 8,000 documents) located at Duke University, Durham NC. This grave stone pictured is in the Derry Presbyterian Church yard in Hershey, PA. I am a great….granddaughter and live in Hershey. This area was Lancaster County in the 1700s.
