Eddie was a water boy during the Battle of Blakeley on April 9, 1865 in Baldwin County, Alabama when he was about eight years old. This battle was the last major battle of the Civil War, began at 5:30 p.m. — some six hours after General Robert E. Lee's surrender at the Appomattox Court House. This battle occured not far from Eddie's childhhod residence.

Later in life Eddie was a cattleman and donated the land for Johnson Cemetery on December 30, 1907, in which he and the majority of his relatives are buried.
