Son of Joseph Very Quarles, Jr. and Caroline (Saunders) Quarles.

His first wife was Anita Carroll MacTavish, a blue-blooded Baltimore actress and society beauty who had been married twice before. She was the daughter of Francis Osborne MacTavish and a descendant of Declaration of Independence signer Charles Carroll of Carrollton.

Anita left her second husband, Danish symphony musician Anton Dahl Kofoed, after only a few weeks of marriage to live with Edward in Germany, causing scandal on both sides of the Atlantic. They were married March 30, 1906 in London. She had a son, Carroll MacTavish Elder, by her first marriage to George Elder. Anita died in Hamburg on February 2, 1914.

His second wife was Katharine Frieda "Kitty" Onken, a daughter of German immigrants. They were married on November 20, 1915. Edward and Kitty had one son, Maj. Edward Henry Quarles (1917-2000). Kitty died in Hamburg on October 3, 1964.

Kitty had a daughter, Dorothy, by her first marriage to Johannes Carl Otto Gätjens, whom Edward adopted. Dorothy first married a Swede, Stig Harald Kjellstrand, and they had two daughters. She was later remarried to Christian Frederik Wiborg, and they lived in Berkeley, CA.
