He married Lucretia Browning of Athens, Ohio, in October, 1841. She died in Garnett, Kansas, March 7, 1871. They had four children, two of whom were still living in 1895.
In Apr 1861 he enlisted and recruited a company of 106 men; he was a captain in Co. I, 18th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He re-enlisted in the 2nd West Virginia Voluntary Cavalry, serving 3 years and 3 months as major and Lt. Col.
While in Garnett he practiced law, was county and city attorney, police judge, justice of the peace and census enumerator for 1890.
