Hastings attended military school as a little boy near Kearney, Nebraska. He attended Dickson College Law School in Carlisle, PA, and graduated with honors. In 1918 he was appointed agent of the Internal Revenue Department for the Middle West, headquartered in St. Paul, Sioux Falls and Aberdeen, South Dakota. In 1924 he was selected to handle a similar job in New Jersey. He served terms as States Attorney and County Judge. 1938 he was elected States Attorney and held that office till his death. He never married. He died suddenly at the Pine Ridge hospital, August 26, 1940 at 62 years of age, Friday morning at 10 am after only a short illness. He became comatose and passed away without gaining consciousness.
